An instructor who played a role in securing accreditation of Keuka College’s Social Work program will be honored on a national stage this month.
The national Council on Social Work Education will bestow its Service and Leadership in Social Work Education Award on Dr. Robert Vernon. The council cited Dr. Vernon’s 40-plus-year career in social work education – a career that started at Keuka College.
Dr. Vernon guided the College’s bachelor's program in social work to its first accreditation in 1978. He served as an assistant professor of social work at the College through the mid-1980s.
“Dr. Vernon has uniquely contributed to social work education by continually sharing information that helps other programs develop accreditable degrees,” said the Council in announcing the award.
Dr. Vernon has been a professor at the Indiana University School of Social Work since 2001. As at Keuka College, he brought the university’s bachelor’s in social work program to accreditation.
“Dr. Vernon is an accomplished educator and leader whose service and scholarly contributions have influenced social work education for 40 years,” Tamara Davis, dean of the Indiana University School of Social Work, told the school’s website.
The award will be presented during the council’s 65th Annual Program Meeting, to be held Oct. 24-27 in Denver.
